Our Soul Matters theme for October is Courage, something that we definitely need as we approach this year’s midterm elections. I’ll be preaching about the importance of courage on the Sundays I’m in the pulpit this month. On Sunday, October 4, I’ll be talking about Courage in the Midst of Cruelty, Chaos, and Fear; and on Sunday, October 18, Courage is Contagious will be the topic of my sermon.
Courage will also be the topic of the online gathering I’m hosting on October 7 to introduce the Soul Matters theme. Part of a series of one-hour gatherings on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., I’ll be introducing the theme of courage by considering some wise words from folks like Frederick Buechner, Audre Lorde, and Brené Brown.
These gatherings are part of my commitment to offer more Adult Religious Education opportunities at the fellowship, both in person and online. At 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, I’ll be leading a one-hour, in-person session on UU History for new members, curious visitors, and anyone else who might be interested in learning more about the roots of Universalism and Unitarianism.
And at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, I’ll be hosting the second online session exploring the UUA’s Rings of Love curriculum. This month’s session will examine how the value of Interdependence shows up in the Rings of Love model: Love within each of us, Love between us, Love among us, Love beyond us, and Love holding us.
Finally, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, Cody J. Sanders, author of Spiritual Care First Aid
An All-Hands Approach for Church and Community, will be leading a two-hour webinar to introduce participants to his book. The Caring Committee and I have been reading Spiritual Care First Aid for several months, and it is truly one of the best books on caring in religious community that I’ve read.
